My child has bugs

God bless second grade teachers!  Don't we love all the things they teach our children?  Reading, writing, history, science....bugs.  Cole's teacher was especially ambitious this year in her life cycle lesson.  Each child was given a meal worm and a caterpillar to care for during this scientific transformation.  Week by week sweet Cole would come home and describe the transformation of "Big Shot" the caterpillar, and "Reggie" the meal worm, who had taken up residence at his desk in little cups.

The caterpillars quickly built and nestled into their cocoons in anticipation of their impending change...a butterfly at last!  How sweet, how gentle, how beautiful....how NOT living in my house.  The butterflies were set free to "become part of the ecosystem."

The meal worms had a similar journey into adult beetlehood.  Exciting!  And soon, the time came for Reggie to move out of second grade and join the real world.  However, being the eco-friendly class they are, the children couldn't release the bugs outside because they aren't part of the natural habitat.  Huh...who knew?

Along comes Cole from school....small "to-go sauce" like container in hand carefully filled with grass, a few sticks...and a BEETLE.  To live in my house.  Reggie.  He eats apples.  I had to shop for the bug because we didn't have any apples.

Day in and day out Reggie continues to thrive in Cole's room in a said container.  According to Cole, he doesn't fly, so the container doesn't need the lid.  Excellent!  I couldn't be more thrilled.
And I'm trusting my child's sudden insect prowess.

BUT WAIT - there's more!  Reggie has a roommate.  "Alan" joined the family today - much to my surprise, and delight.  He was found outside and really, really needed a home, Mom...

I always wanted a boy...but bugs?  Living in my house?  Time to research expected lifespan of domesticated beetle.
